Shopify has a limitation that affects how duties, taxes, and shipping rates are calculated when a customer applies a discount code at checkout.
When a customer enters a discount code, Shopify updates the order value but does not automatically request updated shipping rates. As a result, duties and taxes may initially be calculated using the pre-discounted order value.
Passport offers a Capture Discounts extension to address this limitation.
How Passport's Capture Discounts extension for Shopify works
When a customer applies a discount code at checkout, the extension triggers another request for shipping rates. This allows Passport to receive the updated order value and recalculate the applicable shipping, duties, and taxes based on the discounted amount.
How to install the Capture Discounts extension
The Capture Discounts extension is available for Shopify Plus stores.
To enable Passport's Capture Discounts extension:
From your Shopify Admin, go to Online Store > Edit Theme.
In theme editor, toggle to check out page.
- Select Apps from the left navigation.
Scroll down to Passport Shipping, select Capture Discounts.
Select the + button and add the extension to Checkout.
- Enable Include block in Shop Pay.
- Select Save.
Passport's Capture Discounts extension is now enabled for your checkout.
What happens without the extension?
Without the extension, Shopify does not automatically request updated shipping rates when a customer applies a discount code at checkout. This means Passport may not receive the reduced product value, and the quote may remain based on the pre-discounted value.
With the Capture Discounts extension enabled, a new rate request is triggered after the discount is applied so the updated values can be used.
